1. Born in 1968

Introduction

I was born in Epping, Essex 17 miles outside of London. My father was a London bus driver and my mother a clerk. We lived on a council estate and I had two brothers who were ten and twelve years my senior. 

I left school halfway through my A levels at 17 years old finding my way to Hackney Technical College by the direction of a kindly careers teacher in Loughton. 

When I walked through the careers teacher’s office door I didn’t know what the world Horology meant.
